Assaulted football player Nicky Morgan 'in good spirits'

A non-league footballer who remains in intensive care after being assaulted outside an Essex nightclub is in "good spirits" according to his club.

Billericay Town goalkeeper Nicky Morgan, 25, was taken to the Queen's Hospital in Romford with a neck injury following the attack last Friday.

His club said an operation to remove pressure on his spine had gone well.

Essex Police said an investigation into an altercation between 10 men behind the Sugar Hut in Brentwood was ongoing.

A statement on the Ryman Premier League club's website said: "[Nicky] is back in intensive care and is expected to begin rehab in the next few days on his long path to recovery.

"He is in good spirits and has commented that all the messages of support he has received have overwhelmed him.

"They are helping him through this difficult time."

The club also confirmed it would be raising funds for Mr Morgan at their FA Trophy fixture with St Neots this coming Saturday.

Police said they were continuing to study CCTV footage of the incident in William Hunter Way.
