Fire crews in Essex have been fighting a blaze in the roof of a thatched cottage.

Seven crews from the county and four from neighbouring Suffolk have been tackling the fire at Gestingthorpe, near Halstead.

They were called to the cottage in Church Street at 1830 GMT and found half the roof ablaze.

Firefighters have salvaged items from the house and created a fire break in the thatch.

At first four crews were sent to the scene but on arrival they asked for assistance.

Crews from Sible Hedingham, Halstead, Wethersfield, Brentwood and Braintree attended along with colleagues from Suffolk.
