Spreading straw fire embers close A414 in Essex

Straw bales on fire at a farm in Essex closed the A414 road for several hours.

The fire broke out late on Sunday night at Woodham Mortimer on the main road between Chelmsford and Maldon.

Firefighters spent the night tackling the blaze involving 300 tonnes of baled straw and police were called to close the A414.

Embers started blowing on the carriageway, firefighters said. The road has reopened but the fire is still burning.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin later.
