Essex school closures continue as snow is still falling

More than 590 schools, nurseries and colleges in Essex have been closed due to further snow and wintry conditions.

Fresh snowfall on icy roads in strong winds is causing drifts on the A127 and A13 in the south of the county where travel is increasingly difficult.

Forecasters predict snow will continue to fall throughout the day and will be heavy in many parts of Essex.

Stansted Airport remains open, with some flights subject to delay due to weather-related problems elsewhere.

It advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates.

The Port of Tilbury is closed and Operation Stack is under way along the A13 road with lorries queuing.

Police are reporting several accidents in the Basildon area and they are causing congestion problems.
