More than 40 firefighters are at a burning wood yard which has caused a plume of smoke to drift toward a town centre in Essex.
The fire at High Street, Canvey, was reported to the fire service at 0420 GMT.
A number of roads close to the fire have been closed until the fire has been put out, police said.
Residents in Canvey have been advised to keep windows closed until the smoke has cleared.
Two shops, a bar and a timber yard had been destroyed by the fire by 0730 GMT, the fire service said.
It added the fire is now fully surrounded by water jets and is under control.
Divisional officer Bob Wahl, officer in charge, said: "Crews have done an excellent job containing this fire and preventing it from spreading to the nearby homes.
"It has been a fierce blaze and the buildings are totally destroyed."
