Arrest after man stabbed in chest in Rayleigh

A man has been arrested for attempted murder after a 51-year-old was stabbed in the chest in Essex.

The man was attacked at about 1930 GMT on Friday following an "altercation with another man" near The Blinking Owl cafe, Rayleigh.

The victim, a local man, has been admitted to hospital where his condition is described as stable, but he may require further surgery.

The 46-year-old was arrested for attempted murder.

He was released on bail until 23 January while inquiries continue.

Det Con Clayton Ford said: "The area where the stabbing took place had been busy all day and into the evening with people stopping to buy fireworks and some of these people may have witnessed the incident.

"It is also possible that people using the A127, or the slip road to the A1245, may have seen something."

Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police.
