Fireworks thrown at firefighters in Essex

Fireworks have been thrown at firefighters in Essex who were responding to a call about fireworks put through letterboxes.

Crews were called to Adelaide Road in Tilbury on Saturday night when fireworks were put through the two letterboxes causing small fires.

Fireworks were then thrown at the fire engine, though no-one was hurt and no damage done to the vehicle.

A fire service spokesman said it was "mindless hooligans on the rampage".

"Fortunately in this case, no-one was injured but this was a series of entirely senseless attacks on homes and crews sent out to protect the community," he said.

"Playing with fireworks is a dangerous and stupid thing to do and nine times out of ten involves some kind of injury."

Police are investigating.
