More patrols at University of Essex after sex attacks
Security patrols have been stepped up at the University of Essex following two sex attacks in the space of a week.
On Saturday, a 25-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a group of men at the students' union in Colchester. And on 7 October, a woman, 18, was attacked after leaving a campus nightclub.
Undergrowth near pathways on the campus is also being cleared.
The university and students' union said in a statement that such incidents were extremely rare.
The statement added: "We have reinforced our guidance to students about the importance of personal safety and taken steps to try to provide additional reassurance.
"University patrol staff, who are on campus 24 hours a day, are paying particular attention to the central campus and the pathways to the university residences when venues are closing in the early hours.
"Grounds staff have cleared undergrowth alongside the pathways, and the students' union arranged extra security within and outside its venues at the weekend."
