Floating dead whale destroyed off Portland

A dead whale spotted floating in the sea off the Dorset Coast has been destroyed.

The remains of a type of baleen whale had been seen off Portland on Friday, sparking a navigation warning by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to alert passing shipping.

The agency said the carcass did not wash ashore and was destroyed at sea.

A Dorset Wildlife Trust spokeswoman said such large predators tended to follow sources of food.

Baleen whales have hundreds of plates in their upper jaw, which act as a strainer as they feed. Fin or Minke whales are both types of baleen whales.
