A 23-year-old traveller from Dorset has died after falling from a cliff in Sri Lanka.

Tom Perry, from Christchurch, died in what has been described as a "tragic accident" in Weligama on Friday.

Sri Lankan police said Mr Perry suffered fatal injuries after falling 80ft (24m) from the clifftop at the popular beach resort.

A force spokesman said the circumstances of what happened were still unclear.

Friends and surfers staying at the resort have paid tribute to him with a paddle-out ceremony using a flotilla of surfboards to form a circle out at sea.

Tributes have been paid to him on social networking websites.

Posting on Facebook, his close friend, Ben Patrick, who was staying at the resort with Mr Perry, said: "There are no words to describe how much I will miss you."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "Our staff are supporting the family of a British national who sadly died in Sri Lanka."
