A woman is in a critical condition and three others, including a toddler, have been injured in a two-car crash.

The A35 - the main route through Dorset - was closed for five hours at Dorchester, causing miles of tailbacks.

The crash happened at about 09:10 GMT near the A352 junction, between Dorchester Town Football Club roundabout and Stinsford Roundabout.

The road reopened shortly after 14:00 but traffic remained heavy throughout the afternoon.

A 14-month-old girl was seriously injured in the crash, which involved a Land Rover Freelander and a Vauxhall Zafira.

She had been a passenger in the Zafira, along with a woman in her 60s who suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Zafira, a 43-year-old woman from Portland, and the driver of the Freelander, a 69-year-old woman from London, both suffered minor injuries.

All four were taken to Dorset County Hospital for treatment.
