Bournemouth meat cleaver stand-off man jailed

A man who threatened two hostages with a meat cleaver, sparking an eight-hour police standoff, has been jailed.

Matthew Cummings was witnessed holding the cleaver up against one of the two men during the siege in Mountbatten Gardens, Bournemouth, on 12 September.

The 34-year-old, of no fixed address, eventually surrendered to police. The two hostages were unharmed.

Cummings, who had previously pleaded guilty to making threats to kill, was jailed for 16 months.

At Bournemouth Crown Court, he was also jailed for 28 days for possession of cannabis, to run concurrently.
