Bournemouth fireworks display sparks explosion fears

A private fireworks display sparked a flurry of calls to police after it was mistaken for explosions by people across Bournemouth and beyond.

Dorset Police reassured residents after receiving numerous calls about unexpected loud bangs on Thursday.

Hundreds of social media users posted concerns about the noises.

Bournemouth Borough Council confirmed the display was a private event, after initially indicating to police it was part of a council event.

Dorset Police posted on Facebook: "Following a number of calls to Dorset Police this evening reporting loud banging noises in the Bournemouth town centre area, we would like to reassure residents this is nothing to be alarmed about."

The force initially said it had been informed the display was part of the council-organised Bournemouth Christmas Market and Gardens of Light event, but on Friday morning the local authority said the fireworks were launched from a boat off the pier as part of a private event.
