Castle Lane West drivers face month of delays

A major road improvement scheme has been delayed by more than a month because damage is worse than previously thought.

Drivers will face further delays as Castle Lane West in Bournemouth remains closed until the end of September.

Work was due to be completed at the end of August to improve pedestrian and cycle routes.

Contractors are working during weekends to speed up the process.

The East Way and Castle Lane West junction is now open to traffic with temporary traffic lights installed.

During construction, greater damage was identified below the road surface than originally anticipated and contractors for Bournemouth Borough Council need more time to complete the work.

It is estimated by the council that nearly a third of all secondary school children and one in five of primary school children in the city use the stretch of road.

More than 30,000 cars pass through it every day.

The improvements are funded by the government.
