Three Dorset councils sharing plan to save £6m

Three Dorset councils are planning to share some services in a bid to save £6m.

North Dorset, West Dorset and Weymouth and Portland councils are preparing a bid to be submitted by October 2014.

They are applying for £1.5m from the government's Transformation Challenge Award (TCA) fund.

As part of the plans they propose to share a chief executive and senior management team by 31 March 2015.

The second part of the bid will propose combining and developing joint services.

The proposed partnership would cover more than half of Dorset and serve a population of 235,000.

The majority of the savings, an estimated £6m by 2019/20, would come from better use of assets such as office buildings.

In a joint statement, the councils said: "The partners believe that together they could provide a better and more flexible range of services, focussed on the needs and priorities of their communities and at less cost to the taxpayer."
