A man needed surgery after being struck in the face by a woman wielding a stiletto shoe during a night out.

Dean Roche, 21, from Poole, sustained a fractured cheekbone in the assault near the Slug and Lettuce in the town's High Street at 02:15 BST on 26 April.

Dorset Police said the woman was described as white with dark hair, and was wearing a leopard print top.

A 28-year-old woman from Bournemouth has been arrested and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

"I was talking to my mates, waiting for a taxi, and the next thing I [felt] was a massive pain through my body," he added.

"I realised I'd been hit on the side of my face. At first I thought it was just a punch but then my mate told me it was a stiletto.

"I needed a three-and-a-half hour operation and basically four metal plates went into the side of my head, two around my eye and one in my mouth.

"The pain isn't so bad now but it just makes me a bit wary of going out in the future, I think."

Det Con Jonathan Sainsbury said releasing the picture of Mr Roche's injuries highlighted "the seriousness of the case".

"There were a number of people around at the time who may have witnessed the incident - I urge them to come forward as soon as possible," he added.
