A sculptor has been chosen to create a £60,000 piece of public art at a new business and retail development in Weymouth.

Weymouth and Portland Council has chosen sculptor Andy Kirkby, from Moreton near Dorchester, for the work at the Weymouth Gateway site.

The development on Mercery Road includes Sainsbury's and New Look.

Mr Kirkby will set up a blog so people living in the area can give feedback on his ideas for the artwork.

The artist created the Sea Road Public Art Trail at Boscombe in Bournemouth with the help of people living there.

Mr Kirkby said: "This initial creative engagement with local people has always been a vital part of my past projects.

"Public art should be just that - public, accessible and relevant to the location and its residents."
