A Dorset teenager has been convicted of stabbing his mother to death in her own home.

Kieren Smith, 17, murdered Leah Whittle, 42, in her Benville Road flat in Weymouth on 21 July.

A jury at Winchester Crown Court delivered a unanimous verdict following a two-week trial.

The teenager will be sentenced on Tuesday. A judge lifted reporting restrictions identifying Smith and his relationship to Ms Whittle.

'Tragic case'

During the trial, Smith claimed his mother had been attacked by a group of men who were trying to claim money from a drugs debt.

Det Insp Marcus Hester, from Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation Team, said: "This case involved a particularly horrific and sustained attack on a woman who was unable to defend herself.

"The jury has reached the correct verdict and in due course Kieren Smith will be sentenced as appropriate.

"This is a very tragic case where a young man, through his own violent actions, has killed his mother.

"He now has to face the consequences of these actions as well as to live with the loss of his mother."
