Weymouth Harbour woman rescued by 'heroic' coastguard

An off-duty coastguard has been labelled a "hero" by his colleagues after he dived into a Dorset harbour to rescue a woman who had jumped in.

The man, who has not been identified, was on his way home from work when he plunged into the water, fully clothed, at Weymouth Harbour on Friday evening.

The woman, who has been described as "suicidal", was treated at the scene and later taken to hospital.

A Portland Coastguard spokesman said: "Our man was a true hero."

"He had no thought for himself, he just dived in - he didn't even take his mobile phone out of his pocket."
