Dorset councils to merge adult learning

All adult learning services in Dorset could merge into one department as the council seeks to cut costs.

Under plans being drawn up by Dorset County Council, services in Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole would be run by one single organisation.

The council said the move would save more than £700,000 from the combined £5m budget.

Neighbouring councils Bournemouth and Poole combined their adult learning services in August 2011.

Councillor Hilary Cox, from Dorset County Council, said: "Joint working between councils to ensure that valued services can not only be maintained but even improved is the sensible way forward for all of us in these difficult financial times."

If the plans are agreed the departments would fully merge by autumn 2013 and be managed by the Borough of Poole.
