A new cycleway created as part of an £89m relief road in Dorset is to be linked to existing cycle routes.

The relief road was opened in March to ease traffic between Weymouth and Portland - hosts of the Olympic 2012 sailing events - and Dorchester.

Work will begin on Monday to link the cycleway with the existing National Cycle Network routes in Dorchester.

Dorset County Council said the work, funded by Cycle West, was expected to last six weeks.

It added disruption to traffic would be kept to a minimum during the work, but said single-lane closures would be necessary for some operations.
