Elderly woman rescued from fire in Weymouth

An elderly woman was pulled to safety from her smoke-filled home by firefighters carrying out safety checks nearby.

Crews were called to Meadow View Road in Littlemoor, Weymouth, at 1530 GMT.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to hospital for treatment after breathing in smoke from the fire.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the blaze will form part of an investigation but officers do not believe it to be suspicious.

Phil Head, Weymouth and Portland district commander, said: "The fire crews were in the area at the time and therefore in attendance extremely quickly following the call."
