Health and safety inquiry after soldier death

The Health and Safety Executive is to investigate the death of a soldier killed during training in Dorset.

Emori Ratu, of Waterbeach, near Cambridge, died during a routine bridge-building exercise at the Wyke Regis Training Area, Weymouth, on Thursday.

Dorset Police is also investigating the death of Mr Ratu, who served with 53rd Field Squadron Royal Engineers.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Blandford Coroner's Office on Friday.

'Difficult time'

A police spokesman said Mr Ratu had died during routine training to "disassemble a logistic support bridge".

"There are no suspicious circumstances.

"Police are investigating with the assistance of the Health and Safety Executive."

Previously a Ministry of Defence spokesman said Mr Ratu's "family have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time".
