Dorset level railway crossing damaged after car crashes

A railway crossing and part of a train track in a Dorset village were damaged after being hit by car at the weekend, forcing train services to be suspended.

Police were called to the crossing between West Stafford and Crossways near Dorchester after a gate became stuck when it was hit by the vehicle.

Engineers were called at about 1000 GMT on Sunday and the crossing was closed until 1900 GMT for repairs.

Minutes after the crash two other cars collided at the scene.

A woman in her early 20s inside one of the cars was treated by paramedics.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "Because it caused damage to the carriageway it had to be closed for repairs.

"We will work with the police to find out what happened."
