Trapped dogs rescued from Weymouth drainage shaft

Two springer spaniel dogs have been rescued by firefighters after getting trapped in a drainage shaft in Dorset.

Crews were called late on Friday night after the dogs, which had been missing for several hours, were found 20ft (6m) down in the shaft in Weymouth.

Two firefighters were lowered into the drain, next to a footpath at Southhill, and managed to winch up the spaniels which were then checked over by a vet.

Fortunately the pit was dry and they were unhurt, the fire service said.
