Deer put down after dog attack on Dorset beach
A deer had to be put down after it was attacked and chased into the sea off Dorset by a dog.
The animal became stuck in the mud up to its haunches as it ran into the Fleet behind Chesil Beach to escape the lurcher on Saturday afternoon.
A coastguard rescue officer waded into the water and helped it ashore but the deer had been so badly injured it had to be put down by an RSPCA officer.
Portland Coastguard said lurchers were renowned for attacks.
A spokesman said once they have a deer in their sights it is hard for owners to call them back.
