Police are hunting a man who wielded an iron bar while trying to rob a Co-op store.

Staff were forced to the back of the shop while the man demanded to be shown the safe, officers said.

The Plymouth shop's "very courageous" staff have been praised by police.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the attempted robbery occurred at about 07:00 GMT on Monday at the store in Poole Park Road, Barne Barton.

Officers want to speak to a potential witness dressed in a two-tone blue top who can be seen on CCTV footage.

The suspect is described as approximately 6ft tall, of medium build, wearing dark clothing and a balaclava. He was carrying a yellow plastic carrier bag.
