An elderly man has died in a house fire in Plymouth.

Fire crews attended the blaze, which started on the ground floor in a semi-detached house in the city's Blandford Road, at about 06:40 GMT.

The man's wife was taken to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital and is being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Emergency services are investigating the cause of the blaze, but Devon and Cornwall Police said it was not believed to be suspicious.

Neighbour Susan Perrin said: "I could hear a fire alarm going off and I heard the owner of the house asking neighbours for help.

"We had a look and tried to get in, but all the smoke was coming out of the house."

Ms Perrin said she was hugging the owner, who was asking for her "poor husband" who was in the property.

"The couple had been [living] there for more than 40 years, and were married for 65 years," she said.
