A serving prisoner has appeared in court charged with murdering a fellow inmate at Dartmoor Prison.

William Tolcher, 50, is accused of stabbing Alexander Cusworth, 37, from Teignmouth, Devon, on Thursday.

He did not enter a plea at Central Devon Magistrate's Court in Exeter and was remanded in custody to appear at Plymouth Crown Court on Wednesday.

Cusworth, who was jailed in May, was pronounced dead at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

He had been serving eight years for attacking his landlord so savagely with a broomstick he spent eight days in a coma.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, which runs the jail at Princetown, said: "A police investigation is ongoing so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
