A man has been shot with a Taser and arrested by police after wielding a large meat cleaver in a street.

Police said the 35-year-old was hitting lampposts and other street furniture with the cleaver in Hughes Avenue, Barnstaple, at about 01:45 BST.

He confronted officers from Devon and Cornwall Police who moved back.

Armed officers used their stun guns against the man who they said was "incompliant and behaving violently".

A police spokesman said: "Officers were forced to withdraw after being threatened by the armed suspect and ensured any residents who had ventured onto the street to go back indoors while they awaited backup from firearms officers.

"He continued to threaten the armed officers who eventually discharged their Tasers resulting in the suspect being subdued, restrained and handcuffed."

About 20 lampposts were damaged along with other street furniture, police said.
