A four-storey building in Paignton, Devon has been badly damaged in a fire.

Eight fire engines were called to the fire on the top floor of the building at Torbay Road in the town at about 07:45 BST.

Earlier police closed the street between Queens Road and Garfield Road. There were no reports of injuries.

A demolition crane was brought to the scene late afternoon to make the building safe. Fire crews remained on the scene damping down.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset fire and rescue said the building was used as shops and private living accommodation.

The second and third floors have been seriously damaged by fire, with the ground floor and first floor seriously damaged by water, the spokesperson confirmed.

All people in the building were accounted for.
