Nine arrested in Devon and Cornwall child abuse inquiry

Nine men have been arrested as part of a major child abuse investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police.

The men, suspected of possessing and distributing indecent images of children, are aged between 26 and 78.

The arrests - seven in Devon and two in Cornwall - all took place "in the last few days", officers said.

All of the men have been released on police bail pending further investigations.

Computers seized

Police said the arrests were "separate" and the men were not thought to be part of a gang.

Det Insp Simon Snell from Devon and Cornwall Police said a total of 18 computers had been seized and would be examined by the force's hi-tech crime unit.

"This was an intelligence-led investigation where we received intelligence from other forces and the child online protection centre in London," he said.

A number of printed images have also been seized.

Det Insp Snell said the force's first commitment was safeguarding children and similar operations would be mounted in future.
