An England rugby player who was arrested after an assault outside a Torquay nightclub has been cautioned.

London Irish star Delon Armitage was arrested on 29 January, a day after he played in the England Saxons' 23-17 victory over the Irish Wolfhounds.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the full-back was cautioned last week.

Armitage, 28, who has been capped 26 times for England, was suspended from the Saxons elite player squad following his arrest.

At the same time London Irish released a statement which said it was "extremely disappointed" in the player.

The Aviva Premiership club added it would conduct an internal investigation into the incident, "the outcome of which will determine any further action".

It said: "Player conduct is a direct representation of the club and, therefore, inappropriate conduct will be strongly acted upon."
