Springwatch: Charlie Elder in search of the hawfinch

In the UK, 52 species of birds are considered to be at the highest level of conservation concern and are included on what is known as the "red list".

To feature on the list a bird species must have halved in population or range over the last 25 years. Compiled by the RSPB, BTO and other conservation bodies it includes a range of warblers, the house sparrow and cuckoo.

Devonshire writer and birdwatcher Charlie Elder made it his mission to see every bird on the list but the hawfinch remained elusive until the opportunity arose to join a conservation group in the Wye Valley for BBC Springwatch.

Springwatch can be seen Monday to Thursday at 2000 BST on BBC2 until 16 June.
