A Devon beach has been awarded its eighth blue flag award in a row.

Westward Ho! in north Devon has also received a Quality Coast Award for 2011, for the standard of the resort.

The beach had to meet specific criteria for water quality, safety and environmental education to be given the awards.

The charity Keep Britain Tidy is in charge of administrating the awards. A spokesperson said it was "quite an achievement".

Councillors in Westward Ho hope it will attract more visitors to the resort.

Lead member for tourism councillor Roger Johnson said: "To receive this nationwide award of excellence shows Westward Ho! is clean and safe."

Westward Ho! councillor Roger Tisdale said: "To have received this award eight years in a row is a considerable achievement."
