Derriford Hospital midwives shortlisted for award

Midwives from Plymouth have been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The team from Derriford Hospital's core delivery suite is one of three who could be named "Team of the Year" by the Royal College of Midwives.

Plymouth Hospitals Trust said it was recognition for the team's new service for pregnant women.

This is a triage service, where women who think they might be in labour can contact a midwife for advice.

Expectant mothers are offered an open invitation to come into the triage service, which is on the labour ward.

If they are not in established labour or are still in the early stages, the women are given the option of going home and returning to the hospital later.

Midwife Angela Roberts said that benefited both the expectant mother and the hospital because, where it was safe to do so, women could stay at home for longer.

"We all came together as a team to do this, we have stuck together to achieve it and we have made a difference," she said.

"There are still things we need to fine tune about the triage service but we are really proud of what we have developed and the way we have done it."

The trust said the midwives, who were shortlisted for the award from about 200 entries, were "on tenterhooks" waiting to find out if they had won.

The award ceremony will be held on Wednesday in London.
