A man has been arrested on suspicion of growing cannabis after firefighters noticed suspicious plants while tackling a nearby fire.

They spotted them growing in an attic after being called to Station Road in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, at about 04:15 BST on Sunday.

The fire was at the back of some commercial premises, but the fire service said they had to rescue someone from a nearby flat.

The fire's cause is being investigated.

Police said the 24-year-old man arrested over the drugs offence was not connected to the fire, and has been released on bail.

About 10 plants were found and they will be tested to determine if they are cannabis.
