A man has died after he was rescued from the River Derwent when his canoe became stuck under a bridge.

The 32-year-old was airlifted to the Royal Derby Hospital after getting into difficulty near Crown Square, Matlock, at about 12:45 GMT on Sunday.

It is believed the canoeist, who has not been named, was dragged underwater by strong currents.

The man's canoe was recovered by rescuers on Monday and the force confirmed he died on Wednesday.
