Derbyshire computer games firm Eurocom closes

A games software firm in Derbyshire has closed down with the loss of 200 jobs.

Eurocom, based near Mackworth, faced financial problems following a drop in sales of console games and the loss of several major contracts.

The firm laid off 155 employees several weeks ago and an additional 42 job losses were announced on Friday.

Eurocom, which produced video games featuring James Bond and Harry Potter, opened in 1988.

The firm was put into administration when it was unable to raise enough funds to pay outstanding wages.

A statement from the firm said: "The directors of Eurocom would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to all their staff that have been made redundant at this difficult time."

It said the employees had "consistently delivered exceptional games".

The administrator Smith Cooper said Eurocom was "one of the largest and most prolific independent console games developers worldwide".

The firm had originally hoped to retain 50 employees and restructure the business.

It had developed dozens of computer and video games for most major platforms, including games based on Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman Begins.
