South Derbyshire roadside car vendors block routes

South Derbyshire District Council says it has received dozens of complaints about roads being blocked by people selling cars.

The authority is urging Derbyshire County Council to use powers under the Highways Act to enforce their removal.

Complaints have centred on Cadley Island and Rickman's Corner in Swadlincote.

South Derbyshire will present a joint approach to tackling the problem on 12 April.

In a report to the county council, South Derbyshire said a sustained regulatory effort to control the activity would "change the behaviour of the vendors of these vehicles and will result in real improvements".

A Derbyshire County Council spokesperson said: "Under the Clean Neighbourhood and Environmental Act, district and borough councils can act if the problem is with a trader whose stock is spilling out beyond their sales area.

"In cases where this Act doesn't apply we have powers under the Highways Act to prevent parking which is dangerous, distracting or causing an obstruction on the roads."
