Derby taxis tested by police fail safety checks

More than a third of taxis stopped by police in Derby city centre on one day failed safety tests, it has been revealed.

Following the spot checks on black cabs and private-hire vehicles, eight taxis had their licences removed.

Derbyshire Police said defects on the vehicles included problems with suspension, brakes, steering and tyres.

The checks on Wednesday were carried out by police and city council licensing officers.

PC Lee Simpson said: "A number of these checks have been carried out this year and, despite this, more than a third of cars stopped had defects.

"We are disappointed that so many defects continue to be found on taxis within the city.

"Checks will continue to be conducted to ensure safety for members of the public when using this method of transport."
