A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a fire in Derby.

Seven people, including a teenage boy who jumped out of a window, escaped the fire at a terraced property on Buchan Street just before 02:35 GMT on Friday.

A 32-year-old man suffered the effects of smoke inhalation and was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital for treatment.

A fire and police investigation has begun into the cause, a fire service spokesman said.

The teenager suffered a broken wrist in the jump from the window, a Derbyshire police spokesman said.

"It was a serious fire and totally gutted the living room, the kitchen and there is extensive smoke damage throughout the house," fire service spokesman Adam Hind said.

The fire service said a smoke alarm had undoubtedly saved lives.
