Queen Mother opens Derby's Assembly Rooms

The newly-built Assembly Rooms were officially opened by the Queen Mother on the evening of 9 November 1977.

It was Derby's second royal visit of the year - earlier, the Queen had bestowed city status on Derby.

This archive audio includes the voices of the then mayor of Derby, Councillor Jeffery Tillett, the former women's editor of the Derby Evening Telegraph, Lucy Orgill, and Derby historian Roy Christian.
