Uttoxeter lorry driver killed by slab fall

A Staffordshire lorry driver, 45, has died after his load of slabs fell on top of him at a service station.

Police were called to Tibshelf Services on the M1 in Derbyshire at about 1535 GMT on Tuesday.

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said the panels were being carried upright on a flat-bed articulated trailer, towed by a white Volvo tractor unit.

A joint police and Health and Safety Executive investigation has begun into the death of the Uttoxeter man.

The police spokeswoman added: "The vehicle was carrying some pre-made panels from a construction site. They have the appearance of pre-past, concrete slabs."

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle and its load in the car park at the northbound services yesterday afternoon, as well as anyone who saw it being driven between Derby and Tibshelf between 1410 and 1450 GMT.
