Man hit by car at Borrowash was 'lying in road'

Police are trying to establish how a man came to be lying on a Derbyshire road before being hit by a car.

The 20-year-old, who is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, was struck by a vehicle in Derby Road, Borrowash, at about 0230 GMT on Sunday.

The car's occupants called an ambulance and gave first aid to the man.

Officers say they are trying to find out why the man was in the road and want to trace a group of young men seen in the area at the time.

Sgt Jim Allen, leading the inquiry, said: "We don't know why he was lying in the road. He left the Wilmot Arms with his friends at around 1.45am and started walking towards Spondon.

"They seem to have lost contact with him in the vicinity of Princess Drive. How he then came, a short distance later, to be lying in the road is unknown.

"I appeal to anyone who may have travelled in Derby Road, Borrowash, at around that time to get in touch.

"I am especially keen to speak with anyone who may have seen a group of young men walking from Borrowash towards Spondon."

Anyone with information should contact the Derbyshire force.
