A man who growled "like an animal" in a drink and drug-fuelled attack against his partner has been jailed.

James Butler, 30, punched and headbutted his girlfriend Suzannah Lightfoot at their home on 14 October.

Carlisle Crown Court heard he sank his teeth into her arm, shaking his head as he did so like a "savage animal". He then tried to provoke his dog to attack her, but the pet instead licked her.

Butler, of Milburn Street, Workington, was handed a 20-month prison sentence.

The court heard two police officers were bitten by Butler after his arrest.

Butler, who admitted three charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one charge of cannabis possession, was also given a five-year restraining order.
