A Cumbrian man who tried to stab his former partner in a drunken assault has been jailed.

Michael Carlton, 50, kicked his way into Vicki Ritchie's Distington home on 6 September and threatened to kill her, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

The court heard he pinned Miss Ritchie against a kitchen unit and aimed three knives, in turn, at her throat.

Carlton, of Church Close, Distington, who admitted threatening to kill and wounding, was jailed for 30 months.

Miss Ritchie, who until recently had been Carlton's partner for 25 years, suffered a hand injury in the attack.

The court was told she managed to get away from Carlton and seek safety with neighbours.

Sentencing Carlton, Judge Peter Davies described the incident as an "extremely serious example of domestic violence".
