Mark Russell acquitted over death of hotel worker Gordon Smith

A man accused of the manslaughter of a Lake District hotel worker has been acquitted after the prosecution said it would offer no further evidence.

Mark Russell, 27, of Windermere, was charged following the death of Gordon Smith in July 2015.

At Carlisle Crown Court Judge Peter Davies directed the jury to formally acquit Mr Russell.

Mr Smith, 44, originally from Tyneside, had been working at the Grey Walls Hotel in Windermere.

Police were called on 1 July following reports of an altercation and four people were initially questioned on suspicion of murder.
