A man has been jailed for eight years for raping a woman while she slept.

Wayne Hilton, 40, met the victim during a night out in Carlisle last March, the city's crown court was told.

But after returning to a property in Welsh Road, Hilton, who had denied rape, attacked the woman, from Cumbria, as she slept.

The court heard Hilton, of Ewanrigg Road, Maryport, was discovered when one of the victim's friends walked into the bedroom to check on her.

'Terrible attack'

Sentencing Hilton, Judge Peter Hughes QC also made him subject to sex offender notification requirements and imposed a lifetime restraining order.

After the hearing, Det Sgt Ginelle Ward, of Cumbria Police, said: "The victim is still dealing with the trauma caused by this terrible attack and receives support from victim support organisations.

"She has been extremely brave throughout the whole process and hopefully the sentence imposed will help her recovery.

"Hilton did not gain consent from his victim and has shown no remorse for his actions."
