Man 'critical' after double fatal A595 crash near Carlisle

An elderly man is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash in which two women died.

It happened on the A595 near Newby Cross, Carlisle at about 15:30 GMT on Tuesday.

The 74-year-old driver of a Kia Picanto and a rear seat passenger, a three-year-old boy, were flown to hospital by air ambulance.

Two women aged 29 and 71, who were front and rear seat passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene.

All of the car's occupants were from Carlisle.

The boy is in a serious but stable condition in hospital but the 74-year-old man's injuries are life threatening, Cumbria Police said.

The driver of a Ford Transit van also involved in the crash - a 51-year-old man from Aspatria - was taken to Carlisle Infirmary with minor injuries.
